This is a page that turns in the history of General Motors. The largest American manufacturer has announced the closure of a historic production at Willow Run, at Ypsilantia Michigan.

The Willow Run plant was built during the Second World War by Henry Ford to produce B-24 Liberator aircraft. At its opening, the site was the largest in the world, able to produce 650 aircraft a month!

At the end of the war, Ford did not need the site for vehicle production and eventually sell it to Kaiser and Fraser before it was bought by GM in 1953. General Motors assembled many vehicles Willo Run before finally focusing its operations on the assembly of transmissions. Hydramatic transmissions were built at destination of many cars, including Rolls-Royce.

But when GM went bankrupt last year, he chose not to save the place. The production of transmissions has officially ended nine days ago and until yesterday, the site was still equipped to resume activity. Some 300 employees have retired, others were transferred to other sites.

Baojun 630 La Baojun 630 est arrivée Baojun? Another unknown Chinese brand? Well yes, but not any, since this is the new brand of GM, SAIC and Wuling, which has unveiled officially its new sedan 630.

Like Honda (Linian) and Nissan (Venucia), GM adopts a new strategy in the Chinese market to compete head-on local brands. They are indeed positioned in lower price ranges compared to foreign brands, even locally assembled. Rather than lowering the price, and therefore the image, for their valuable brands, the manufacturers thus create new ones in cooperation with local partners.

At GM, it is called so Baojun (Horse precious), created in cooperation with SAIC and Wuling. The first model will be the sedan 630, based on the platform of the previous generation Buick Excelle, better known in our region as Chevrolet Nubira.

The production of this started in the factory of the joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling Liuzhou, with a capacity of 100,000 vehicles per year. It will be offered in a specific network, with engines 1.5 and 1.8, associated with 5-speed manual transmissions or automatic 6-speed. Its price will be lower than 100,000 yuan.

It will be on public exhibition in Guangzhou next month and could be used by GM and SAIC in their expansion outside China.

Within the international activities of GM, the division of labor is changing for the African continent, with the creation of two poles for North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
