Ford unveils the latest addition to its family of models with very low CO2 emissions, with the world premiere of the new Ford Focus ECOnetic at the Amsterdam Motor Show 2011.
Capitalizing on the excellent levels of consumption and CO2 emissions of the new Focus range, the Focus ECOnetic goes further by offering improved fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions simply exceptional, with only 94 g / km, more in its class.
Available in 5 door and SW, it will be marketed in the European market from early 2012.
“The range of Ford ECOnetic owes its reputation to its exceptional levels of consumption and CO2 emissions. It appeals especially to customers wishing to reduce their carbon footprint,” said Gunnar Herrmann, director of C-segment vehicles from Ford.
“With the CO2 emissions of just 94 g / km, the Focus ECOnetic takes the dynamic performance and intelligent technologies for the new Focus and combines outstanding fuel efficiency.”
Technologies to reduce CO2 emissions the most recent
The new Focus ECOnetic is powered by a new version of the diesel engine Ford Duratorq TDCi 1.6-liter 105-hp, with an injection system and turbocharger unpublished optimized cooling and reduced engine friction, to yield energy even better.
The Focus ECOnetic is equipped with components of active grille, tires with low rolling resistance and a final reduction ratio recalculated. It also has system-Ford Auto Start-Stop, which cuts the engine off, recharge by recovering kinetic energy from the battery, the Ford Eco Fashion and the gearshift indicator.
An exclusive high-performance engine
The injection system common rail diesel engine has been completely redesigned and now boasts 8 hole injectors operate at pressures up to 1600 bar and controlled by a management system more powerful. This new injection system offers greater control accuracy and efficiency of combustion.
To provide more precise control of temperature charge air cooler and a charge and denser, the admission system now boasts a heat exchanger cooled by water instead of air system / air classic .
Other features also help improve the energy efficiency of the Focus ECOnetic:
“A new variable geometry turbocharger
“The engine friction reduced by special treatment of piston rings and oil pump with variable displacement.
“A further reduction of motor losses due to a vacuum pump and low inertia of the crankshaft gear asymmetric
“An improved emission control system combining a catalyst to reduce NOx and diesel particulate filter Diesel coated.
The new ECOnetic 1.6 liter diesel engine is coupled to the manual transmission Ford Durashift 6-speed, also equipping all new versions of the Focus TDCi 1.6-liter engine. This transmission has a totally new concept, designed to offer high energy efficiency by eliminating friction losses, and uses a special low-friction oil.
The report final reduction was also modified to optimize the gear ratios, reducing engine speed and fuel consumption. This simplicity is further enhanced by the installation of tires with low rolling resistance.
An exclusive aerodynamic package
If the all-new Ford Focus Classic already has a very aerodynamic body – the Cx 5-door version of 0.295 – the ECOnetic version was designed to further reduce drag through various exclusive facilities.
During development, the aerodynamics have focused on the optimization of airflow under the vehicle. The ECOnetic version adopts and protections and lower additional deflectors, covering almost the entire floor between the axles and a new underbody protection on the rear axle.
The aerodynamic performance is further enhanced by the use of steel rims with hubcaps ECOnetic special low drag, much more aerodynamic than traditional alloy rims.
The new Focus ECOnetic is also endowed with a standard component of Shell assets, contributing to an innovative system to optimize the aerodynamics of the vehicle through vents regulate air flow entering through the grille in the circuit and cooling the engine compartment.
When air is needed to cool the engine air intakes are open. But when the airflow is no longer required, they are closing, substantially reducing aerodynamic drag.
Mounted in the opening of the grille to the radiator grille of the active component consists of motorized horizontal blades, can turn 90 degrees to block the airflow. Controlled automatically by the electronic control module of the vehicle, the blades can be rotated in 16 different positions – their total closure to their fully open – depending on the amount of air required.
Position of total closure, reducing aerodynamic drag is such that the active component of shell lowers CO2 emissions by 2%.
Ford ECOnetic technology helping to reduce CO2 emissions
Like all new models in the Focus ECOnetic version receives serial full range of Ford ECOnetic technology.
“Our technology program Ford ECOnetic allows us to offer customers the Focus innovations ensuring affordable low CO2 emissions,” said Gunnar Herrmann. This is a major step in reducing the environmental impact of our products and allows our customers to opt for a vehicle decidedly green and sustainable. ”
These technologies include:
Ford Auto Start-Stop – The system automatically stops the engine at idle – at a red light, for example – and then restarts when the driver wants to leave, removing any fuel when the vehicle is the Judgement. Levels of consumption and CO2 emissions can thus be lowered from 10% in urban driving.
Charging by the recovery of kinetic energy – the Focus ECOnetic gets a new optimized version of this system increases the power of the alternator when the vehicle brakes or decelerates. The vehicle’s kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy without consuming fuel. This electric current “free” is used to recharge the battery so that it can later be used by electricity consumers. An advanced management continuously monitors the battery condition so that the regenerative charging is used as efficiently as possible.
Ford Eco Mode – The Ford Eco Mode is a new driver information system that helps drivers to change habits and adopt a more economical driving style, this system allows potentially reduce fuel consumption by about 10 %. Sophisticated software – developed with the help of professional trainers specialize in eco-driving – monitors driver behavior and provide clear information on driving performance as well as simple tips for reducing fuel consumption. A simple drawing of flowers displayed on the dashboard allows the driver to monitor its progress in three key areas of the gearshift, the anticipation of driving and speed.
The gearshift indicator – The indicator ratio change can be a valuable aid for drivers who want to reduce their consumption. This indicator is displayed on the instrument cluster alerts the driver whenever it is likely to reduce its consumption by engaging in a higher gear.
The Focus ECOnetic also obtains other technologies supporting the reduction of CO2 emissions, which are fitted as standard on most models of the new Focus range, including:
“The electric power steering
“The engine oil and transmission in low friction
“The accessory drive low voltage
“Thermal management to optimize the temperature rise
Commercialization in early 2012
Available in 5 door and SW, the new Ford Focus ECOnetic will be produced for the European market in the Ford plant in Saarlouis, Germany and will be marketed beginning in early 2012.
“With its extremely low emissions of 94 g / km, the new Ford Focus ECOnetic demonstrates Ford’s commitment to be at the forefront in terms of fuel consumption, and to offer our customers a wide range of affordable models low CO2 emissions, “said Gunnar Herrmann. The Focus ECOnetic is acquiring the ultimate technology to provide outstanding fuel efficiency and emission levels extremely low.”
